Town of Hillsborough offices will be closed Monday, May 25 to observe Memorial Day. Residential solid waste will not be collected that day.

Residents whose garbage and yard waste are normally picked up on Mondays will receive service on Tuesday, May 26.

Orange County will delay curbside recycling collection by one day next week. The county also will close its waste and recycling centers and its construction and demolition landfill on the holiday.

Rollout carts may be placed by the street as early as 4 p.m. the day before collection. Please remove carts from the streetside by 6 a.m. the day after collection.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May. It is a day of reflection and solemn observance to honor those in the armed forces who have lost their lives in service to their country.

In a proclamation approved earlier this month by the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners, Mayor Mark Bell calls on community members to recognize and support the loved ones of the fallen and to reflect on their role in creating a more just, peaceful nation and world.

A Memorial Day ceremony will be 8:45-10:15 a.m. May 25 at the Orange County Veterans Memorial, 2501 Homestead Drive in Chapel Hill. Hillsborough’s mayor will acknowledge the service branches at the start of the ceremony. He is a former member of the U.S. Naval Reserve.
