Town of Hillsborough offices will be closed on Friday, June 19, to observe Juneteenth. Residential solid waste will not be collected that day.
Residents whose garbage and yard waste are normally picked up on Fridays will receive service on Monday, June 22. This change includes the monthly collection of bulk items for disposal that would have fallen on June 19.
Orange County also will close its waste and recycling centers and its construction and demolition landfill for the holiday.
Rollout carts may be placed by the street as early as 4 p.m. the day before collection. Please remove carts by 6 a.m. the day after collection.
Juneteenth
Juneteenth, recognized on June 19, celebrates the emancipation of those enslaved in the United States. It commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last of enslaved people were declared free in Galveston, Texas, under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
Orange County will host a Juneteenth celebration in Hillsborough, with the first event starting at 10 a.m. June 12.
In 2020, the town designated Juneteenth as a holiday for employees. In 2023, the board issued a continuous proclamation recognizing Juneteenth as an important date in history.
Town banners depicting U.S. and state flags will be displayed June 13-20 in recognition of Flag Day and Juneteenth. See the news release regarding the schedule of banners through early July.
