The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners met Monday, June 22, at the Town Hall Annex. Following is a brief summary of noteworthy actions. It does not include all actions taken at the meeting and should not be viewed as official minutes.

Mayor Mark Bell opened the meeting by recognizing the recent death of former Orange County Commissioner Jamezetta Bedford. Her family intends to plan a memorial service.

Data Centers

The board held a public hearing before adopting a yearlong moratorium on data center development. Eight community members spoke, expressing support for a moratorium. The pause allows the town time to develop land use regulations for data centers.

Rezoning

The board approved two rezoning requests for properties on:

• Meadowlands Drive — The rezoning from a high intensity commercial district to an economic development district will allow the church operating on the site to expand. The church was established on that parcel before the town made changes to zoning definitions.
• U.S. 70 near the Corbinton Commons neighborhood — The rezoning from an assistive living neighborhood to a multifamily district will allow the construction of about 67 townhomes.

Hog Day

The board approved a special event permit for the annual Hog Day festival on Sept. 18-19 in downtown Hillsborough. Sections of East Margaret Lane and South Cameron Street will be closed to through traffic.

Historic District Commission

The board approved a change to the town’s unified development ordinance. The change reduces the board from seven seats to five and modifies the minimum number of members present for voting to ensure the board could function if seats become vacant.
