"Hillsborough’s Government 101 is a great opportunity to learn about how your local government works and to prepare you to be more involved on an appointed board or to better serve a community organization,” Mayor Mark Bell said. "Our entire community benefits from having more informed community members."

Government 101 will be offered Thursday evenings, Sept. 10 through Oct. 22, with one Saturday morning session, Oct. 3. To earn a certificate, participants must attend six of the eight sessions. Participants must be at least 16 years old. Water and sewer customers and people who live within the town limits or planning jurisdiction are encouraged to apply.

Each session will give participants an opportunity to talk with town staff and to ask questions in a small group setting. Topics covered will include:

• Town government basics, including sustainability, strategic planning and communications
• Fire and police services
• Stormwater and environmental services
• Fleet maintenance and public works
• Planning, economic development and affordable housing
• Water treatment and distribution
• Wastewater collection and treatment
• Public space and transportation
• Budget and financial services
• Decision-making
