Floodwaters lodged debris in the Wendy Olson and Charles Burger Bridge, which crosses the Eno River near Weaver Street Market.
The Town of Hillsborough is asking community members to complete a survey by Aug. 15 about the town’s response to Tropical Storm Chantal.
We understand that the aftermath of Tropical Storm Chantal has been challenging for our community, said Hillsborough Police Maj. Andy Simmons, who serves as the emergency management coordinator for the town. Completing the community survey is an important step in our journey to recovery.
Starting July 6, more than 10 inches of rain fell quickly in Hillsborough, causing severe flooding and damage throughout the town and Orange County. Forecasts had called for 1 to 3 inches.
Town staff are reviewing actions, making repairs and planning for future emergencies.
Providing feedback and ideas on how the town and Hillsborough community can leverage lessons learned from Tropical Storm Chantal is a critical step in improving our ability to respond to future emergencies, Town Manager Eric Peterson said. With severe weather events becoming more frequent and severe, the town is identifying priorities to elevate our response capabilities.
Survey questions ask community members about their assessment of the town’s preparedness and their satisfaction with communications. Overall results will be shared with the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners as part of the after-action review of the storm.
The survey is available online, and individual respondents may choose to remain anonymous. Paper copies can be picked up from the town clerk in the Administration Building on the Town Hall Campus, 101 E. Orange St.
Your insights and experiences will help us better understand the storm's impact, prioritize the support we need, and truly listen to your voices as we come together to rebuild and strengthen our neighborhoods, the police major said. Your feedback is invaluable, and we appreciate your willingness to share.
