Kings Highway Park is now open to the public after being damaged during Tropical Storm Chantal.

Repairs

Hillsborough Public Works crews and contractors removed hazards by:

  • Removing trees, mud and debris that blocked many sections of the trail.
  • Replacing damaged fencing.

The floating canoe and kayak launch was damaged during the July storm. Town staff are evaluating repair and replacement options.

Other Recreation

Repairs are continuing at other recreation facilities. Please do not enter Gold Park and the closed sections of the Riverwalk greenway. These locations are active worksites.

Opening the park and full greenway while repairs are being made would create safety concerns for the public and contractors due to the use of heavy equipment. Keeping these areas closed allows contractors to complete repair work faster.

Gold Park — Repairs are still ongoing after more than 6 feet of water flooded the restrooms. Repairs to the restrooms include replacing the electrical system, plumbing fixtures, wall tile and flooring.

Contractors have completed fencing repairs in the park and are almost done resurfacing the playground and dog park. Volunteers will be needed to resurface the pollinator garden after the park reopens to the public. To volunteer with the Orange County Master Gardener Program, contact Bill Rote at 919-904-0397.

Repairs in Gold Park are on track to be completed this month.

Riverwalk — Contractors are resurfacing the greenway between Cameron Street and the Occoneechee Speedway Trail. The portion of the greenway closest to Occoneechee Speedway Trail is owned and maintained by the state.
