UPDATE — Oct. 28, 2025: The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners has decided to terminate the town’s contract with Flock Safety.

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners will hold a closed session this evening to discuss the town's contract for 10 license plate reader cameras.

The discussion is due to data privacy concerns. The board will consult with the town’s attorney in the closed session during the board’s regularly scheduled work session, which will begin at 7 p.m. The mayor plans to request moving the closed session to the beginning of the meeting.

This past summer, the town entered into a two-year contract with Flock Safety for cameras that take still images, focusing on a vehicle’s distinguishing features, including its license plate number. Installation of the cameras began this month and has been paused due to the data security concerns.

The Police Department contracted with Flock Safety to use the cameras for investigations and to provide assistance to other agencies in locating missing people and solving crimes.
