Town Hall will be lit green to support veterans and raise awareness about the challenges veterans face in accessing benefits and services.
Town of Hillsborough offices will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11, to observe Veterans Day. Residential solid waste will not be collected that day.
Residents whose garbage and yard waste are normally picked up on Tuesdays will receive service on Wednesday, Nov. 12. Bulk items collection will be Nov. 10 and Nov. 12-14.
Orange County will delay curbside recycling collection by one day next week. The county’s waste and recycling centers and construction and demolition landfill also will be closed for the holiday.
Rollout carts may be placed by the street as early as 4 p.m. the day before collection. They should be removed from the streetside by 6 a.m. the day after collection.
The mayor has issued a proclamation asking community members to show their support for veterans by displaying a green light Nov. 4-11 in a window of their business or home. The proclamation supports the efforts of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative to support veterans and raise awareness about the challenges many veterans face in accessing benefits and services.

Veterans Day
Veterans Day celebrations began on Nov. 11, 1919, as Armistice Day, celebrating the end of World War I. Armistice Day was legally recognized as a federal holiday in 1938. In 1954, the day was changed to Veterans Day to celebrate all veterans.
Events celebrating Veterans Day will be offered throughout Orange County, including a celebration at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Orange County Veterans Memorial in Chapel Hill.
