If you need to leave packages or valuables in your car, tuck them out of sight to reduce the risk of a break-in.

Help keep theft and risk out of your holiday hustle and bustle with these tips from the Hillsborough Police Department.

“Holidays are a wonderful time and can bring enjoyment, but it’s important to remember criminals like the holidays as much as we do,” said Sgt. Scott Foster, who leads the Community Services Division. The division recommends the following holiday tips to keep your household safe and your packages in your possession.

Shopping

  • Lock your vehicle and hide any valuables. Most thefts are from unlocked vehicles.
  • Keep your wallet in your front pocket or your handbag in front of you and close to your body.
  • Be aware that someone may intentionally distract you in a store while an accomplice steals from you.
  • Don’t let a packed parking lot discourage you from choosing a well-lit parking spot.
  • When walking to your car, hold your car key or fob in your hand and look around you.

Package Delivery

“Package thieves — often called porch pirates — typically follow delivery trucks through neighborhoods, collecting packages soon after they are delivered,” Foster said.

  • Call 911 if you see a vehicle driving unusually slow through a neighborhood.
  • Try to arrange to be home when something of high value will be delivered.
  • Consider having a high-value item sent to your workplace.

Away From Home

  • Ask neighbors to watch your house.
  • Don’t advertise your vacation plans.
  • Ask the Hillsborough Police Department to check on your house.

Driving

  • Never drink and drive.
  • Pre-load transportation apps like Uber or Lyft on your phone and learn how to use them before you have a drink.
  • Never drive when you are fatigued. Rest in a well-lit parking area.
