Grave openings and burials may take place in the Town Cemetery only by a licensed funeral director under the town's supervision. The town must be notified at least one work day in advance by funeral homes or monument companies for grave marking. The town does not mark graves on weekends.
Graves will be opened at least 5 feet from the bottom except for cremations. All graves must be level with surrounding areas. Each burial plot is limited to the interment of one of the following:
- One human body.
- One human body and one cremation urn.
- Up to four cremation urns.
Purchase and Speculation of Burial Rights
All cemetery plots have been sold. Burial rights may not be sold or exchanged for a profit or gain, and burial rights may not be acquired at an in-town rate for the burial of a nonresident. The fee for each burial plot was $500 for a town resident and $1,000 for a nonresident.
Certificate of Burial Right
A Certificate of Burial Right was issued to the person who purchased a burial right. It identifies the purchaser and specific lots and plots purchased. It entitles the owner to use the designated spaces as a place of burial for any person, subject to the terms and conditions of the Hillsborough Cemetery Ordinance. Upon the owner's death, all rights of the certificate pass to the owner's heirs, legatees or devisees in the same manner as other interests in personal property.
