The board contracts with several organizations and individuals to provide regular administration and visitor services in town.

• Contracts require annual reports to the board and are renewable yearly.
• Contract amounts are dispersed as agreed by both parties.

The Tourism Board has contracted with the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough to operate the Hillsborough Visitors Center at the Alexander Dickson House, 150 E. King St. The center offers a gift shop, tours, exhibits and gardens.

The board’s activities are supported by proceeds from a 1% tax on prepared food and beverages. Of the net proceeds, the board allocates:

• 40% to facilities, programs and services designed to attract tourists.
• The rest to operating the visitors center, producing and distributing promotional materials, marketing, market research, visitor services and other services designed to make a visitor's stay pleasant and instructive.

Composition

• One member of the Board of Commissioners.
• One member representing the local chamber of commerce
• One member representing the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, Inc.
• Four members must be owners or operators of restaurants in Hillsborough that are affected by the prepared food and beverage tax.
• At-large members to bring the total to nine. The at-large members shall either reside within the town, own property within the town, or have a principal place of employment within the town.

Members serve two-year terms. Following service for three successive two-year terms, a member may not be reappointed until an interval of at least two years has passed.
