Awareness
Property owners with utilities easements need to be aware of the easement boundaries before building or planting. Contact the Engineering Services Division to:
- Learn if you have an easement on your property.
- Request permission before placing anything in an easement.
Upkeep and Clearances
Property owners are responsible for upkeep, such as mowing, of their property where easements are located and within the road right of way.
Property owners also must maintain sufficient clearance to allow the town to access, operate and maintain its assets. Clearance requirements are measured from the center point (radius) of the device:
- Fire hydrants — 3 feet
- Manholes and concrete vaults — 6 feet
- Water meters, valve boxes, sewer cleanouts and other utilities features not listed — 2 feet
Additional information on the technical specifications for utilities and sanitary sewer use can be found in the Hillsborough Code of Ordinances, chapters 14 and 15.
