Town leaders have pledged their intention to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2040. To reach this goal, the town has adopted a Vision Zero policy to guide how it plans and implements transportation projects, safety initiatives, maintenance of public rights of way and traffic enforcement practices.
About Vision Zero
Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy and equitable mobility for everyone.
The approach:
- Views traffic deaths as preventable instead of inevitable.
- Requires meaningful collaboration, leadership and accountability among local traffic planners and engineers, policymakers, public health professionals, police and community members.
- Integrates human failing into designs to ensure mistakes do not result in severe injuries or fatalities.
- Expects system designers and policymakers to make improvements to the roadway environment, policies and other related systems to reduce the severity of crashes. This includes analyzing designs and policies for safety improvements if road users make mistakes.
- Calls on safe levels for speed.
- Calls on individual road users to be responsible for following rules.
