Hillsborough has had two police dogs but currently has one: Jett. Jett is a dual-purpose patrol dog in that she can perform patrol search duties in addition to protecting her partner and apprehending suspect.

Jett joined the department in 2018. The German shepherd dog was named by students in Hillsborough. 

Police dogs typically retire between 6 and 10 years of age. They live with their handlers.

The canine officer and handler demonstrate their work for local schools and community groups.

The police dogs are certified annually by an independent trainer. Each month, the canine officers and their handlers train for at least 16 hours in a variety of scenarios and in different locations and weather conditions. They also train with handlers and dogs from surrounding agencies.
