Investigators are trained in advanced crime scene processing, fingerprinting, forensics, interviewing and photography. They process crime scenes for major incidents to help in the investigation. 

They work with:

• Other units in the Police Department.
• Other municipal and state law enforcement agencies and federal agencies, such as the Drug Enforcement Administration, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Secret Service.
• Other local and state agencies, such as Child Protective Services and the Orange County Department of Social Services.

An officer may transfer a crime report to an investigator for further investigation. Investigations could include homicide, assaults, robbery, theft, burglary, and financial and juvenile crimes. 

Investigators work on a case until:

• Warrants are issued.
• Victims decline to participate further.
• All possible leads are exhausted.

They may:

• Interview people potentially involved in the case.
• Process evidence that requires specialized training to handle.
• Obtain additional evidence of criminal activity.

Investigators frequently seek the public's help and will use social media in addition to traditional investigative techniques. Posting pictures and information online regarding perpetrators and crimes has helped to identify suspects and develop leads in cases.
