Over the years, the Police Department has had problem-solving teams to work with communities in Hillsborough on a number of issues, such as:

The Community Action Team:

• Continues to perform problem-solving work.
• Offers programming to build relationships with the community.

Community Services Programs

The Administrative and Support Division offers a variety of community programs and nontraditional police services, including:

• Community Watch
• Easter egg hunts for dogs
• Medication drop-off events
• National Night Out
• Safety presentations at schools, nursing homes, workplaces and similar venues

The Police Department has three electric bikes that it uses to:

• Connect with community members.
• Maneuver through crowds at community events and through wooded areas, fields and other places a patrol vehicle might not be able to access.
• Patrol areas without drawing as much attention as a patrol vehicle.
• Search for missing people.

The Pedego e-bikes are mountain terrain rated and have packs with safety and first-aid supplies. Community grant funds from the Orange County Alcoholic Beverage Control Board helped pay for their cost. 

The bikes can travel up to almost 30 miles per hour and have an estimated range of 38 to 76 miles on a full charge.

The Hillsborough Police Department offers live-scan fingerprinting:

• Free to Hillsborough residents (with proof of residency).
• For $20 for non-residents.

On request and at no cost, officers will:

• Assess a home's security and offer suggestions for safety improvements related to lighting and landscaping. 
• Provide security checks of homes in town limits when residents are not home.

Home Security Checks

Officers will:

• Check your home when you are away to ensure that doors and windows appear secure and untouched.
• Look for irregularities, such as damage to property and leaking pipes. They cannot guarantee that all irregularities will be found.

Officers will not:

• Enter a home without signs that the home is unsecured.
• Water or cut grass.
• Feed animals.

Vehicle Break-ins

"Smash and grab" break-ins are not common in Hillsborough.

• Lock your vehicles. 
• If you must leave valuables in your car, place them in the glove box, center console or trunk before you arrive at your destination.

• Place lights and radio or television on a timer.
