Tree Board
The Tree Board is responsible for hearing requests from residents regarding planting, maintenance and removal of street and park trees. It also is responsible for establishing guidelines for spacing of trees on town property.
All meetings are open to the public.
For more information, contact Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.
The board's Treasure Trees program creates awareness of and gives recognition to the preservation of significant trees in the Hillsborough area. A significant tree may be on public or private land and can be recognized for its historic value; beauty; value to wildlife; or exceptional size, age, shape or color.
Trees can be nominated for the program using the online form.
The town has long been a part of the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program. In order to qualify for the program, the town is required to have:
- A tree board or department.
- A tree care ordinance.
- A community forestry program with an annual budget of at least $2 per capita.
- An annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
The national nonprofit Bee City USA organization has recognized Hillsborough's work to reverse pollinator declines. Tree Board members serve as liaisons to the Bee City USA organization and as committee members for the program. For more information, see the Bee City USA page on this website.
The Tree Board supports a program to remove invasive plants with year-round volunteer opportunities. To volunteer or receive more information, contact the Public Space and Sustainability Division by email or by calling 919-296-9600.
