Volunteers Needed to Serve on Advisory Boards
Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2017
If you work in a Hillsborough restaurant or hotel or know a lot about trees, Hillsborough needs your help.
The town has vacancies on three advisory boards. To apply for these vacancies or any position on a town advisory board, fill out the online application on the town’s website.
The Tourism Board needs a volunteer to fill a restaurant seat. This person must own or operate or be employed at a restaurant or bar in town that remits the food and beverage tax. The meetings take place at 6:15 p.m. the first Monday of each month.
The Tourism Board drives economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services. It sponsors programs and activities designed to improve Hillsborough’s attractiveness to visitors. To accomplish this, the board reinvests the town’s prepared food and beverage tax in funding for grants, special projects and partnerships, and contract services.
Tourism Development Authority
The Tourism Development Authority needs a volunteer to fill a hotel seat. This person must own or operate or be employed at a hotel or bed-and-breakfast in town that remits the food and beverage tax. This can include homeowners who lease rooms or a house through Airbnb and VRBO. The Tourism Development Authority meets quarterly at a date and time decided by board members.
The Tourism Development Authority promotes travel, tourism and conventions; sponsors tourism-related events; and finances tourism-related capital projects. The authority is responsible for administering the proceeds of a 3-percent room occupancy tax. At least two-thirds of the tax’s proceeds must fund travel and tourism promotion, with the rest available for other tourism-related expenditures.

The Tree Board has one vacancy. Applicants with knowledge of trees, forestry, landscaping and gardening are encouraged to apply. Meetings are at 9 a.m. the third Wednesday of each month.
The Tree Board is responsible for hearing requests from citizens regarding planting, maintenance and removal of street and park trees. It is also responsible for establishing guidelines for spacing of trees on town property.
