Little Library Ready for Lending
Monday, July 31, 2017
On your next visit to Gold Park, check out the books in the “free little library” recently installed along the walking loop.
Noah Mace, a West Hillsborough resident and a member of the Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Board, offered to build and install the small structure that houses the books. In addition to his time, Mace donated the building materials for the project.
The Orange County Public Library donated books to get the library started. Anyone can take a book to read or leave a book to share at the little library.
“We’re happy to help stock the Gold Park Little Free Library with books,” said Orange County Public Library Communications Specialist Libbie Hough. “By passing along some of the donations we receive at the library, we get to spread the love of reading with even more folks.”
Free little libraries have grown in popularity across the country in recent years. A small structure keeps the books out of the weather, and volunteers occasionally restock it with books or remove inappropriate materials if those needs arise.
“The concept of having a little library in Gold Park is just one more of the many things that we can be proud to have in Hillsborough,” said Commissioner Brian Lowen, who serves on the Parks and Recreation Board.
“Anything that we can do to encourage more reading and provide for easy accessibility to reading materials is another positive feature to add to the park,” Lowen added. “It’s my hope that the use of the little library will exceed expectations and that we can perhaps add them to other town parks and at multiple locations within Gold Park.”
Gold Park is located at 415 Dimmocks Mill Road, and the little library is located near the large picnic shelter. For more information about the little library or Hillsborough’s parks and public spaces, contact Public Space Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.
