Serve on a Town Advisory Board
Monday, Nov. 5, 2018
Can you donate some time to help shape the future of Hillsborough? Several town advisory boards are asking for volunteers to take a seat at the table.
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment is seeking applicants to fill two vacancies coming up in 2019 for seats designated for in-town and extraterritorial jurisdiction residents.
The board reviews and rules on applications for conditional use permits and variances. The board also hears appeals of decisions of town staff and the Historic District Commission.
Meetings are at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. Terms are for three years. For more information, contact Senior Planner Tom King by email or by phone at 919-296-9472 or visit the board’s page on the town website.
Historic District Commission
The Historic District Commission is seeking qualified candidates to fill anticipated vacancies in 2019. The commission is beginning the interview process for qualified candidates, so submit your application as soon as possible for consideration.
Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. Residence in the Historic District is not mandatory. Applicants should have an interest in preserving and protecting Hillsborough’s historic resources and should have demonstrated knowledge in historic preservation, architecture, planning, history, archaeology or related fields.
Meetings are at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month with occasional special meetings and additional training sessions as required. Terms are for three years. For more information on the Historic District Commission, contact Planner Justin Snyder by email or by phone at 919-296-9473 or visit the commission’s page on the town website.
The Tourism Board has a vacancy to be filled by someone who owns, operates or works in a restaurant or bar in town that collects the prepared food and beverage tax.
The board drives economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services. It sponsors programs and activities designed to improve Hillsborough’s attractiveness to visitors. To accomplish this, the board reinvests the town’s prepared food and beverage tax in funding for grants, special projects and partnerships, and contract services.
Meetings are at 6:15 p.m. on the first Monday of the month. Terms are for two years. For more information, contact Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477 or visit the board’s page on the town website.
Tourism Development Authority
The Tourism Development Authority has an opening for someone who operates, owns or works for a place that offers overnight accommodations and collects the occupancy tax required by the Town of Hillsborough. Owners of Airbnb accommodations qualify to fill this seat.
The Tourism Development Authority promotes travel, tourism and conventions; sponsors tourism-related events; and finances tourism-related capital projects. The authority is responsible for administering the proceeds of a 3-percent room occupancy tax. At least two-thirds of the tax’s proceeds must fund promotion of travel and tourism, with the rest available for other tourism-related expenditures.
Meetings are held quarterly on a mutually agreeable date. Terms are for two years. For more information, contact Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477 or visit the authority’s page on the town website.
