Reminder: Autism Awareness Event This Weekend
Thursday, April 12, 2018
Don’t miss Autism Awareness Family & Friends Day this Saturday at Gold Park.
The event, co-sponsored by the Hillsborough Police Department, takes place 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and coincides with National Autism Awareness Month. Attendees will be able to meet with employees from the Police Department, Orange County Sheriff’s Office and Orange Rural Fire Department as well as explore several emergency response vehicles. The importance of safety in the community for children, teens and adults with the developmental disorder will be discussed.
Games and other activities for children and teens will be provided by the Orange County Department of Environment, Agriculture and Parks and Recreation. Food will be provided by the Autism Society of North Carolina’s Orange/Chatham Counties Chapter.
This is the fourth year the Hillsborough Police Department has offered Autism Awareness Family & Friends Day. Autism inhibits a person’s ability to communicate, respond to surroundings and form relationships with others. It affects people of all racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Gold Park is located at 415 Dimmocks Mill Road. For more information about the event, contact Senior Cpl. Tereasa Matthews by email or by phone at 919-296-9543. For more information about autism, visit the Autism Society of North Carolina website.
