Volunteers Needed for Town Advisory Boards
Would you like to help shape the future of Hillsborough? Several town advisory boards need volunteers to join them in working to ensure that Hillsborough continues to be a great place to live, play, work and visit.
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment is seeking applications to fill a vacancy in September for a seat designated for an in-town alternate.
The board reviews and rules on applications for conditional use permits and variances. The board also hears appeals of decisions of town staff, the Technical Review Committee and the Historic District Commission.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month. Terms are for three years. For more information, contact Senior Planner Tom King by email or by phone at 919-296-9472 or visit the board’s page on the town website.
Historic District Commission
The Historic District Commission is seeking qualified candidates to fill a vacancy in November.
Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. Residence in the Historic District is not required. Applicants should have an interest in preserving and protecting Hillsborough’s historic resources and should have demonstrated knowledge in historic preservation, architecture, planning, history, archaeology or related fields.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month with occasional special meetings and additional training sessions as required. Terms are for three years. For more information on the Historic District Commission, contact Planner Justin Snyder by email or by phone at 919-296-9473 or visit the commission’s page on the town website.
Parks and Recreation Board
The Parks and Recreation Board is seeking candidates to fill several vacancies this summer.
Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. The board strives for representation from different neighborhoods. Several of the board members live in West Hillsborough, and residents of other neighborhoods are encouraged to apply.
The Parks and Recreation Board advises the town on issues related to park facilities. The board also works to implement the recommendations in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which is the board’s guiding document. The master plan is revised annually.
Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month. For more information, contact Public Space Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.
The Tourism Board has an unfilled seat for someone who owns or works for a restaurant or other business that collects and remits the prepared food and beverage tax.
The Tourism Board drives economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services. It sponsors programs and activities designed to improve Hillsborough's attractiveness to visitors. To accomplish this, the board reinvests the town's prepared food and beverage tax in funding for grants, special projects and partnerships, and contract services.

Tourism Development Authority
The Tourism Development Authority has an opening for someone who operates, owns or works for a place that offers overnight accommodations and collects the occupancy tax required by the Town of Hillsborough. Owners of Airbnb accommodations qualify to fill this seat.
The Tourism Development Authority promotes travel, tourism and conventions; sponsors tourism-related events; and finances tourism-related capital projects. The authority is responsible for administering the proceeds of a 3% room occupancy tax. At least two-thirds of the tax’s proceeds must fund promotion of travel and tourism, with the rest available for other tourism-related expenditures.
Meetings are held quarterly on a mutually agreeable date. Terms are for two years. For more information, contact Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477 or visit the authority’s page on the town website.
