Sidewalk Construction Underway on West King Street
A contractor for The Colonial Inn has begun sidewalk construction in front of the inn, located on the south side of West King Street between Wake and Churton streets.
In conjunction with the historic inn’s restoration, a new, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant sidewalk is being created in front of the inn’s full-width porch, which currently extends into the right of way. The construction is expected to be complete within four to five weeks.
The private construction project is being coordinated between the inn’s owners and the N.C. Department of Transportation, which maintains West King Street.
Flaggers will be posted to direct traffic around the work as needed. The sidewalk on the south side of West King Street will be closed during construction. Workers may need to use some on-street parking spaces for equipment or materials during construction. Motorists and pedestrians are advised to observe all safety signage and to use caution in the work zone.
Last month, the Hillsborough Board of Commissioners approved contributing up to $10,000 to assist the inn’s owners with the cost of the sidewalk’s construction. The owners told the board they also planned to ask the Hillsborough Tourism Board and Tourism Development Authority for additional financial assistance with the project.
