Orange County to Begin On-Demand Ride Service Pilot Program

Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021
The Orange County Public Transportation MOD (Mobility On Demand) program will allow users to request a same-day ride for $5 per trip.

Orange County Public Transportation will begin a pilot program for on-demand transportation in the Hillsborough area beginning Friday, March 5.

The MOD (Mobility On Demand) program will allow users to request a same-day ride for $5 per trip from 5 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Service will be available within Hillsborough town limits and to and from the Eubanks Road Park-and-Ride facility in Chapel Hill.

Unlike ride-sharing companies like Uber and Lyft, drivers will be county employees driving county-owned vehicles. The MOD vans will accommodate riders with disabilities and will be cleaned and sanitized regularly.

The pilot program, scheduled to run through mid-August, is being implemented in partnership with TransLoc, a Ford Mobility Company.

Rides can be requested through the TransLoc smartphone app, by calling 919-245-2008 or by visiting the TransLoc website. The app will provide passengers with an estimated pick-up time, track the van’s location in real time, and alert them when the van is about to arrive.

For more information about the program, see the MOD page on the county website.
