Volunteers Needed to Serve on Appointed Boards

Thursday, June 3, 2021

Interested in offering your time and insight to a Hillsborough board? Several boards need volunteers. All boards are holding virtual meetings while North Carolina remains under a state of emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Board of Adjustment

The Board of Adjustment has a vacant seat designated for someone who lives in the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. See the Jurisdiction and Service Areas page on the town website to determine whether you reside in the extraterritorial jurisdiction.

The board reviews and rules on applications for conditional use permits and variances. The board also hears appeals of decisions of town staff and the Historic District Commission.

Meetings are at 7 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month as necessary. Visit the Board of Adjustment page on the town website. For more information, contact Senior Planner Tom King by email or by phone at 919-296-9472.

Historic District Commission

The Historic District Commission is seeking qualified candidates to fill two upcoming vacancies.

Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. Residence in the Historic District is not required. Applicants should have an interest in preserving and protecting Hillsborough’s historic resources and should have demonstrated knowledge in historic preservation, architecture, planning, history, archaeology or related fields.

Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month with occasional special meetings and additional training sessions as required. For more information on the Historic District Commission, contact Planner Justin Snyder by email or by phone at 919-296-9473 or visit the commission’s page on the town website.

Parks and Recreation Board

The Parks and Recreation Board is seeking candidates to fill two vacancies.

Applicants must reside in the Hillsborough zoning jurisdiction, either inside the town limits or in the extraterritorial jurisdiction. The board strives for representation from different neighborhoods around town.

The Parks and Recreation Board advises the town on issues related to park facilities and greenways. The board also works to implement the recommendations in the Community Connectivity Plan and parks master plans, which are the board’s guiding document. See the Parks and Recreation page on the town website.

The board meets at 7 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month as necessary. For more information, contact Public Space Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.

Tourism Board

The Tourism Board has a vacancy for someone who owns or works for a restaurant or other business that collects and remits the prepared food and beverage tax.

The Tourism Board drives economic development by promoting travel, tourism and visitor services. It sponsors programs and activities designed to improve Hillsborough's attractiveness to visitors. To accomplish this, the board reinvests the town's prepared food and beverage tax in funding for grants, special projects and partnerships, and contract services. See the Tourism Board page on the town website.

Meetings are held the first Monday of the month. For more information, contact Economic Development Planner Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477.

Tree Board

The Tree Board is seeking to fill two vacancies. Applicants do not have to live within the Hillsborough town limits.

The Tree Board provides stewardship for trees in the town’s rights of way and on town property. See the Tree Board page on the town website.

The board meets at 9 a.m. the third Wednesday of the month. For more information, contact Public Space Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9481.
