Solarize the Triangle Offers Group-Purchase Program

Friday, Aug. 19, 2022

The Triangle Sustainability Partnership is providing an opportunity for solar energy system installation on buildings in Orange County at a group-purchase rate.

Savings on solar energy and battery power installations at your home, business or non-profit organization will be gained through combined purchasing with others in the Triangle in addition to the savings provided through federal tax credits.

“The path to clean energy future is not mysterious — we know what we need to do and programs like Solarize the Triangle play such an important role,” Mayor Jenn Weaver said. “As we press for solar energy to become more affordable to all income levels, group purchasing efforts like Solarize make going solar more attainable for more people.”

Solarize the Triangle is a community-based group-purchasing program for solar energy, battery storage and other clean-energy technologies. The initiative is designed to help residents, businesses and nonprofits to become more resilient, reduce energy expenses, and save on the cost of renewable-energy systems by obtaining volume discounts on materials and installation services.

Solarize campaigns are driven by community group purchasing. Based on a tiered “bulk” purchasing concept, the more local residents and business owners who contract for their solar installations through the program, the more savings accrue to all participating property owners.

In addition to Hillsborough and Orange County, other participating Triangle communities include Chatham and Durham Counties; the cities of Durham and Raleigh; and the towns of Apex, Carrboro, Cary, Chapel Hill and Morrisville. The Triangle J Council of Governments and Solar CrowdSource are facilitating the launch of Solarize the Triangle.

Solarize the Triangle's organizers chose Cary-based Yes Solar Solutions for installation. The organizers used detailed criteria to carefully choose a qualified firm to ensure best-in-class materials will be installed by qualified solar professionals for the lowest price through volume purchasing.

The enrollment deadline is Dec. 31, 2022. All solar and battery installations are expected to be completed by Nov. 30, 2023.
