The draft chapters of the town’s first comprehensive sustainability plan are available now for public review, and the town needs your feedback.

“Picture in your mind’s eye a Hillsborough where all kinds of people are able to live and thrive, where our treasured natural areas and public spaces are intact, and where more of us are able to safely get around via foot or bicycle. That future is possible, but it takes vision, dedication, patience, and — most of all — it takes a plan,” Mayor Jenn Weaver said. “We need your input to help us create, as a community, that more equitable, environmentally sustainable future for Hillsborough.”

The chapters are located on the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan page. Please read the entire plan or the chapters that interest you and provide comment through this online comments form. Anyone who needs assistance accessing the plan or providing comments also may contact Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone at 919-296-9600.

Comments will be accepted through 5 p.m. April 21, 2023. A public hearing on the draft plan is expected to take place at 7 p.m. April 20 in the Board Meeting Room at the Town Hall Annex, 105 E. Corbin St.

The purpose of the plan is to guide future development and the town government’s transition to using 100% clean energy by 2050. The plan’s chapters cover the following topics:

  • Climate and energy
  • Economic systems and tourism
  • Environment and natural systems
  • Housing and affordability
  • Land use and development
  • Social systems and public space
  • Town government and public services
  • Transportation and connectivity

Although the chapters may be read individually, they interconnect. It would be most insightful to read the plan from beginning to end.

“The chapters of the plan are like the songs on a good album,” Trueblood said. “They provide deeper meaning and new connections are discovered when the album is absorbed in its entirety.”

The Comprehensive Sustainability Plan will guide growth and development in Hillsborough for at least a decade. Please be sure your voice is heard by providing comment during this period and by spreading the word about the need for public input. Diverse input is needed from residents throughout Hillsborough.
