Volunteers Needed to Serve on Appointed Boards

Updated at 3:17 p.m. on Aug. 22, 2023: The Board of Adjustment, Planning Board and Water and Sewer Advisory Committee continue to need applicants.
Please consider offering your time and expertise by serving on a Hillsborough board. Several boards have vacancies.
Board of Adjustment
The Board of Adjustment has a vacancy designated for an alternate who lives outside the town limits but within the area that falls under the town’s zoning regulations, or extraterritorial jurisdiction. The alternate is a voting member of the board only when a regular member cannot be present.
The board reviews and rules on applications for special use permits and variances. The board also hears appeals of decisions of town planning department staff.
Meetings are at 6 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month as needed. Terms are for three years. Visit the Board of Adjustment page on the town website. For more information, contact Senior Planner Tom King by email or by phone at 919-296-9475.
Planning Board
The Planning Board is seeking to fill two vacant seats designated for a resident who resides outside the town limits within the town’s extraterritorial jurisdiction. See the Jurisdiction and Service Areas page on the town website to determine whether you reside in the extraterritorial jurisdiction.
The Planning Board reviews planning issues within the town’s zoning jurisdiction. It also reviews and makes recommendations on rezonings, subdivisions and ordinance amendments. See the Planning Board page on the town website.
Meetings are at 7 p.m. the third Thursday of the month. Due to current public health concerns, the board is meeting remotely via Zoom. Terms are for three years. Visit the Planning Board page on the town website. For more information, contact Planning and Economic Development Manager Shannan Campbell by email or by phone at 919-296-9477.
Water and Sewer Advisory Committee
The Water and Sewer Advisory Committee has a vacancy for a seat designated for an out-of-town water customer. Half the board seats are designated for in-town water customers, and half are for out-of-town customers.
The Water and Sewer Advisory Committee is responsible for making recommendations related to management of the Water and Sewer Fund. Recommendations address areas such as public information, operations, and finances. As part of this responsibility, the committee receives updates and requests information from staff to stay informed.
The committee seeks diversity in its membership to include representation from residential, commercial, and institutional customers. The committee member term is four years. Applicants from new neighborhoods also are encouraged to apply.
The committee meets at 7 p.m. the first Thursday of every other month. Members also attend other pertinent meetings on a rotating basis. See the Water and Sewer Advisory Committee page on the town website.
