Hillsborough utilities staff have completed emergency repairs to a 6-inch water main that was struck this afternoon, Sept. 18, by a fiber contractor working on Thompson Court.

Crews have flushed water lines to remove any sediment and taken water samples for bacteriological testing. Affected properties will be under a system pressure advisory until test results indicate the water is safe to drink. Properties that did not lose water service or water pressure are not affected.

About 71 properties had water service halted to complete the repairs. The affected properties included all of Holiday Park Road and Odie Street and a portion of Faucette Mill Road. Signs were placed at intersections or roadsides to inform customers of the outage and low system pressure, and an emergency notification was issued in the area through OC Alerts.

Test results take about 24 hours to complete. Check the town website and follow @HillsboroughGov on Facebook, Nextdoor and Twitter for updates. Sign up for OC Alerts to receive emergency notifications including advisories regarding boiling water. The notifications are issued only for areas in which significant portions of town customers are affected.

System pressure advisory

Loss in pressure could allow water contamination; such contamination has not been confirmed yet through testing. As a precaution, consumers are advised to boil water or use bottled water for any consumption, including for drinking, ice making, brushing of teeth, pet water, handwashing, dishwashing and food preparation. Vigorous boiling for one minute should kill any disease-causing organisms. Boiling water concentrates any levels of nitrates that may be present in the water. For this reason, pregnant women and infants below the age of 6 months should use an alternate water supply, such as bottled water, whenever possible.

The system pressure advisory remains in effect until further notification is issued. During this period, please conserve water when possible. See guidance on the town’s FAQ: Water Advisories and Notices page, www.hillsboroughnc.gov/faq-water-advisories
