5th Pocket Skateparks has provided several renderings, including this one, to suggest elements that could be included in the town’s first skate spot.

The town manager’s recommended budget includes funding construction of a skate spot in Cates Creek Park in Fiscal Year 2024.

A small-scale skateboarding park, or skate spot, is planned for Cates Creek Park, which is owned by the town and has sufficient space to add a skate spot of roughly 5,000 to 6,000 square feet. See the project page to view renderings of the skate spot, including a fly through video rendering.

In the spring, Hillsborough’s public works division cleared land for the skate spot to facilitate survey work for the upcoming project. Construction had been planned for Fiscal Year 2025.

Background

In Fiscal Year 2023, the town contracted with the design build company 5th Pocket Skateparks to conduct community workshops and develop plans for the skate spot. The town and 5th Pocket hosted a design workshop in January 2023 to receive input on the park features. Over 50 local skaters and skate enthusiasts participated in the workshop.

There has been community interest in a skate park in Hillsborough for decades. The Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Board has prioritized the addition of a small-scale skateboarding park, believing it will provide a needed safe space for teens and adolescents in Hillsborough.

A skate spot is a small skate park. The Hillsborough Parks and Recreation Board has recommended that the town include a few skate spots in its long-term park plans. General inquiries can be directed to Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood by email or by phone, 919-296-9600.
