Comprehensive Sustainability Plan Adopted
The Comprehensive Sustainability Plan is now the official document guiding Hillsborough growth and development. The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners adopted the plan June 12.
“Adoption of the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan is a huge accomplishment, and we are thankful to the many hands and community participation that got us here,” Mayor Jenn Weaver said. “This plan gives us a roadmap via specific recommendations to put the vision and mission of the town into practice in a way that will foster a more equitable and environmentally sustainable Hillsborough well into the future."
The purpose of the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan is to guide future development and the town government’s transition to using 100% clean energy by 2050. The plan’s chapters cover the following topics:
- Engagement and empowerment
- Town government and public services
- Land use and development
- Environment and natural systems
- Transportation and connectivity
- Social systems and public space
- Housing and affordability
- Economic development and tourism
- Climate and energy
Recommendations from the plan will be implemented through the Strategic Plan, which is in development and will focus on three years of strategic initiatives at a time, informing the town’s annual three-year budget.
Background
The creation of the Comprehensive Sustainability Plan began in 2021 with a community visioning survey. Early in the process, meetings were held with focus groups to concentrate on specific aspects of the plan. The draft plan was posted on the website in March with a link to an online comments form, and Public Space and Sustainability Manager Stephanie Trueblood’s email address and phone number also were provided as an alternative way to make comments. A public hearing on the draft plan was held in April. The final version of the plan incorporates the public comments received from individuals and focus groups throughout the process.
