On the agenda: Employee milestone awards, police oaths of office and deer population control

The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners met Monday, Jan. 8 at the Town Hall Annex. Following is a brief summary of noteworthy actions. It does not include all actions taken at the meeting and should not be viewed as official minutes. The meeting is available for view on the town’s YouTube channel

Presentations 

Employee milestone awards — The board received a presentation recognizing 14 town employees for their tenure with the town, including two employees who have served 25 years. View the attached presentation for the full list. 

Oaths of office — Sgts. Candace Spragins and Van St. Pierre reaffirmed their oaths of office with the Hillsborough Police Department. 

Proclamation

The board approved a proclamation designating January as National Mentoring Month. This proclamation intends to honor mentoring programs and the positive impact of mentoring young people.

Appointments 

Barney Caton and Victoria Pace were reappointed to the Tourism Board with terms expiring in December 2025. 

Deer population control 

The board received a presentation from Hillsborough resident Bill Harris regarding the deer population in Hillsborough. He suggested urban archery as an option for mitigation.  

The board requested more information on urban archery before deciding. Resident volunteers offered to conduct additional research and contact the wildlife commission for a presentation to staff.  

Project updates 

The board approved: 

  • Budget amendments to support the development of the Ridgewalk Greenway and the train station project. 

  • An ordinance to transfer $710,000 from the Water and Sewer Fund Balance to the Utilities Capital Projects Fund to cover typical unexpected design costs for renovation of the Adron F. Thompson Water/Sewer Facility. The total cost of the project is now $4 million.
