The Hillsborough Tourism Board is accepting grant applications from local nonprofits for programs and projects that will increase tourism and help more people enjoy Hillsborough in person.

Preference in scoring will go to applications that can demonstrate a project will directly bring visitors to town.

Applications open at 8 a.m. Feb. 26 and are due at 5 p.m. April 12. Applications must be submitted online through the submission management system Submittable: hillsboroughnc.submittable.com/submit.

Grant requests can range from $500 to $10,000 and will require a 20% match. Applicants seeking funding for multiple projects must complete separate applications for each project. Funded projects must take place between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025.

“The Hillsborough Tourism Board is looking forward to receiving new ideas for events, projects, and programs—particularly those that would bring people into town early and mid-week and bring visitors to a variety of different neighborhoods and commercial areas in town,” said Shannan Campbell, Hillsborough’s planning and economic development manager and the staff support to the Tourism Board. “The Tourism Board has been focused over the last several years on building a reputation as a welcoming community with a variety of offerings for visitors. They want to keep expanding on that.”

The Tourism Board plans to award grants to the top scoring applications at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. May 6. Past recipients have included organizers of public concerts, art and food festivals, theatrical productions and historical exhibits.
