No Mow March Helps Native Pollinators

For the month of March, the Hillsborough Tree Board is asking residents to do more by doing less!

To give native pollinators a good start this spring, please consider reducing or not mowing.  The Town of Hillsborough is a Bee City USA and looks for ways to create habitats for native pollinators, including many important species of bees.

The start of the growing season is a critical time for native species. At this time, they emerge hungry and ready to forage for nectar and pollen. Both can be hard to find even in suburban environments. By avoiding mowing in March and any applications of pesticide or herbicide, you help provide a stable nectar and pollen supply at this critical time for pollinators.

Beyond March, the Tree Board encourages residents to reduce the frequency of mowing. By mowing less, you can reduce your lawn’s need for water, encourage drought resistance in lawns, reduce emissions from gas-powered lawn equipment and drastically improve our local biodiversity.

See the Tree Board page for more information about initiatives that support native plants and pollinators.
