The Hillsborough Police Department has secured 21 juvenile petitions related to a series of motor vehicle thefts and break-ins.

More juvenile petitions are pending as the investigation continues. A petition is a formal pleading that initiates a juvenile court case.

Between Jan. 29 and March 4, Hillsborough police officers responded to 4 motor vehicle thefts and more than 10 motor vehicle break-ins.

On March 5, investigators sought and received 14 petitions for one juvenile and 7 petitions for a second juvenile. Investigators say more petitions are pending for a third juvenile and they are working to identify a fourth subject.

Pursuit of these subjects has been a multi-agency effort due to the crimes spanning neighboring jurisdictions, including Carrboro, Durham, Mebane and Orange County. A deputy with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office encountered two of the juveniles as they abandoned a stolen vehicle in the early morning on March 5.

In accordance with North Carolina law, the juveniles’ identities cannot be released at this time.
