Everyone is invited to join the Hillsborough Tree Board at an Arbor Day tree planting and ceremony at 9 a.m. Nov. 15 at the Dorothy N. Johnson Community Center, 501 Rainey Ave.

Members of the Tree Board will plant several pawpaw trees at the community center. The pawpaw is a small, understory tree that is native to this area. It produces a large edible fruit that is enjoyed by wildlife including opossums, foxes, squirrels, raccoons and birds but not deer.

The tree planting and ceremony is part of an annual Tree Board Arbor Day Celebration tradition. The North Carolina Forest Service will present the town with its annual Tree City USA designation.

The Tree Board is responsible for decisions regarding planting, maintaining and removing trees on town property, including in the town’s rights of way. The board aims to plant more trees each year than it has to remove for an overall gain in tree canopy on town land.

During the last fiscal year, the Tree Board planted additional trees on South Nash Street, in Gold Park, on the Town Hall Campus and along the Riverwalk greenway.

For more information about this board, see the Tree Board page on the town website.
